1,001 YIEDIE Soft Skills Trainees Graduate

A total of 1,001 trainees have graduated from the soft skills training of the Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative for Employment (YIEDIE) project. The graduation ceremony, organised in four different locations, is the last for the year 2016 and saw the highest number of young people graduating so far from the project.

The graduation ceremony was organised concurrently in Accra, Sekondi-Takoradi, Tema and Ashaiman, four of the five project implementing locations. Prior to the graduation, graduands underwent training over periods between seven to nine weeks in entrepreneurship skills, financial literacy, life skills and work readiness to prepare them for available opportunities in Ghana’s booming construction sector.

The breakdown of graduands per location included 363 in Accra, comprising 202 male and 161 female, while 184 graduated in Sekondi-Takoradi. The 184 graduands from the Western regional capital comprised 118 male and 66 female. In Tema, 91 male and 108 female graduands, making up a total of 199 graduated from the soft skills training. The fourth location, Ashaiman, presented 117 male and 138 female soft skills trainees, totalling 255.

Emmanuel Nomafo, YIEDIE Program Manager at YES-Ghana, in his address at the Ashaiman event, outlined YES-Ghana’s portfolio on the project, explaining the various steps of the project, from community visits by the respective field teams, through community-based activities aimed at recruiting young people between the ages 17 to 24 years for the project. At these events, interested young people are screened to ascertain their preference between acquiring technical construction skills through training by master craftsmen in their chosen construction area. On the other hand, qualified young people who desire to be entrepreneurs in the construction sector are taken through the soft skills training.
