Francis Lomotey Shares His Experience as the Winner of the SDG Youth Essay Competition (2017).

Francis Lomotey, winner of the 2017 SDG Youth Essay Competition

I heard about the SDGs Youth Essay Competition 2017 on radio, (Global FM in Ho). I was enthused when I heard about the competition and decided to participate because it sounded like a laudable competition that provides an opportunity for the youth to also contribute their ideas towards making Ghana and the world a better place as far as attaining the global goals is concerned. I believe I am endowed with potentials that if tapped or given the opportunity, I would excel and make a meaningful impact, but getting such an opportunity was difficult. Hearing about this wonderful competition, which is more than just essay writing, made me happy and this compelled me to take the decision to participate. I was adjudged the overall winner for the  Competition.

Participating in the SDG Youth Essay Competition has given me some positive experiences and exposure that I may not have acquired. My confidence has been boosted because I participated in this competition. I have been empowered as a result of participating in this competition, and this has propelled me to aspire higher heights and taking up challenging tasks that have shaped me to be a better person. With the experiences acquired, I was able to advocate on SDGs, collaborate with some youth groups such as Kwahu South Sanitation Volunteers Club in working towards addressing environmental and other social topical issues that we are faced with as a country.

I am a nominee in the ongoing Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition in the Best Ideas Category, 2019. The exposure I acquired during the competition has given me the opportunity to participate in three days Global Youth and Peace Building Online Consultation 2019, organized by Peace Direct and United Network for Young Peace Builders. The benefits I have acquired so far are many and I wish to use this medium to once again express my sincerest heartfelt gratitude to Youth Empowerment Synergy (YES-Ghana) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for unearthing the potential in me and empowering me to become more efficient, effective and prolific. God bless you.
