FAQs – 2019 National Essay Competition

  • Who qualifies to participate?

Ans: Any student enrolled in a second-cycle institution in Ghana (Senior High, Vocational or Technical School)

  • Are there any age limitation?

Ans: No. Once you are enrolled in a second-cycle institution, you qualify to participate regardless your age. However, you are required to attach a photocopy of any of the following: your admission letter, student’s ID card or a letter of introduction from you school. Without any of these, your entry will not be processed.

  • What do I win?

Ans: The winner receives GHS 5,000.

The second place winner receives GHS 3,000.

The third place winner receives GHS 1,000.

The fourth place winner receives GHS 500.

The fifth place winner receives GHS 500.

Also, the top 5 winners will be named SDG Youth Ambassadors. As SDG Youth Ambassadors, they will be expected to embark on awareness creation campaigns in their schools or communities. The top five entries will be published on the website of YES-Ghana.  All shortlisted applicants will also receive a certificate of achievement.

  • What kind of information am I required to provide?

Ans: A) Information about yourself

B) Details of guardian / teacher who endorses your essay

C) Provide response to “If appointed as an SDG Youth Ambassador, describe the steps you will take to create awareness of the SDGs in your school or community?

D) Provide a response to the essay question “SDG 4 enjoins Ghana to ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes. In your view, how can this objective be achieved in your community by 2030?

  • Am I required to pay any fee?

Ans: No. You are not required to pay any fee. Customized notepads have been printed, which can be picked up for free before 28th June. Submission is to be made at any of the designated pick up points at no cost latest by 5th July, 2019.

Parents and teachers are encouraged to pick notepads on behalf of their wards.

  • Where can I pick up a notepad?

Ans: Greater Accra – YES-Ghana office, close to the UPSA, East Legon; Ashanti – Ultimate FM (Kumasi); Brong Ahafo – Nimde3 FM; Central – ATL FM (Cape Coast); Eastern – Bryt Fm (Koforidua), Northern – Bishara Radio (Tamale); Upper East – Tanga Radio (Bolgatanga ); Upper West – Radio Mak (Wa); Volta – Global FM (Ho) and Western – Spice FM (Takoradi). Members of the SDG Youth Clubs may pick up theirs from their club facilitators.

  • Can I type my essay?

Ans: No. Essays should be handwritten and written in the notepads provided only. Handwriting should be legible for easy reading.

  • What happens after submitting my essay?

Ans: The entries will be marked after which shortlisted applicants will participate in a second level assessment. The results from the second level assessment and essays will determine the top 5 winners.
