Paula Ampomah-Ababio Shares Her Experience as a Finalist of the Youth Essay Competition (2017)

My name is Paula Ampomah – Ababio, a finalist at the SDG Youth Essay Competition, 2017 and I am delighted to share my story.

Actually, I found out about the Competition from my mum. One afternoon just before I commenced National Service, she called to inform me about something interesting she had seen in the newspapers. My mother kept going on and on about what a good exposure this could be for me, and she also gave me some ideas. Although, it was just a couple of weeks to the deadline, I quickly started researching into the problems facing my community. I visited the UN library at the Balme Library (University of Ghana), and started writing. I saw this as an opportunity to end the menace of teenage pregnancy and other pertinent issues in my community as a whole.

I must admit that it was quite an amazing and inspiring experience for me; making new friends and interacting with colleagues from all over the country. I was also chosen to speak at the Awards Ceremony and that was a great exposure, to say the least. Participating in the SDG Essay Competition has really helped me to discover my strengths in writing and has also boosted my confidence as a young writer generally.

I would personally encourage young people out there to always look out for educative competitions like this one and I hope that they would endeavour to participate fully.
