On 24th January 2018, the Training and Capacity Building Manager at YES-Ghana, Mr. Eric Saforo and a journalist from CitiFM, Mr. Jonas Nyabor attended a roundtable meeting in Lagos Nigeria where they deliberated on how Civil Service Organizations (CSO) and the media can collaborate effectively to foster reporting on social justice and accountability. A total of 32 other participants from different media and civil society groups from Benin and Nigeria attended the meeting.
The objectives of the one-day meeting which was organized by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting included the following: to promote collaboration and partnership between CSOs and media for governance and accountability campaigns, to understand the roles of both actors in bringing about social justice, and to appreciate and find practical solutions to the challenges of effective partnerships between CSOs and the media.
To achieve the objectives, the meeting had presentations that spoke on the essential roles of media and civil society in fostering social and accountability campaigns; and toolkits for effective media and CSO bonding. The presentation on essential roles of the media and CSO spoke elaborately on the constitutional role of the media as the watchdog and their responsibility to the people in bringing about transparency and good governance. The roles of civil society in this regard were also highlighted. In summary, it was stressed that both groups are working towards the same goal and that the civil society and the media can achieve much more to promote social justice and accountability when they work together than the sum total of their individual efforts.
The meeting identified challenges impeding CSO and Media collaboration and made recommendations on ways to practically overcome such challenges and form effective partnerships. ICIR will organize a follow-up meeting in February to support both groups with their partnership development.
