YL4SC Mentor Preparatory Workshop in Kumasi

YES-Ghana convened a 2-day orientation meeting for 15 selected mentors from UDS in Tamale, UENR in Sunyani and UCC in Cape Coast to prepare them for their assignment with the Fellows on the Youth Leadership for Social Change project at Rosapearl Hotel in Ejisu, Kumasi. The preparatory meeting which was held on 12 and 13 February 2019 was aimed at orienting the mentors on how to provide support for the fellows of the YL4SC as they embark on designing their team projects. The orientation was led by the Project Manager, Mr. Eric Saforo with support from the Policy and Advocacy manager, Ms Obaa Akua Konadu.

Mentoring support is part of the second phase of the Youth Leadership for Social Change project funded by the Ford Foundation. During the first phase of the project which was implemented last year, the mentors only provided one-on-one support to the Fellows. This time around, the mentors will not only engage with the individuals but also with the whole team.

Orientation session at Rosapearl, Kumasi

A total of 180 fellows of the project have already received a leadership academy training in January in social change model for leadership development. After the training, 5 teams of fellows were formed on each campus to conceptualise and design social change initiatives which they will receive funding up to GHS 20,000 to implement on their respective campuses or communities surrounding the university. The role of the mentors is to coach and guide the teams during the process of conceptualisation and design of their projects.

The mentors are experienced faculty members and development workers based either on campus or around the university. A mentor’s toolkit and a youth action for change toolkit developed by YES-Ghana was used as the main document for the orientation. At the end of the training the mentors felt they were ready to meet with their respective teams. Each team is assigned 1 mentor who will be their capability partner, thought partner, cheer leader, and supporter. The quality of the mentors’ work will be determined through the types of project the teams of Fellows produce.
